One-to-One SurfBoard building Courses in South Cornwall

Placed in Cornwall's captivating landscape, a short drive from the town of Falmouth, lies a vibrant workshop dedicated to the timeless art of crafting surfboards.

Our course is tailored for those who have a genuine interest in learning the ropes of surfboard building, in a no-nonsense, hands-on manner. We believe in a practical approach, with a sprinkle of DIY flair. Throughout the experience, you'll gain the skills and confidence to create another board down the line.

Our specialty lies in crafting Epoxy style boards, known for their durability, lightweight nature, and flexibility that translates into an exciting ride. What's more, the epoxy material we use is not only environmentally responsible, with 40% of it being bio-based, but it's also odour and fume-free.

Ahead of the course, we will get to know your surfing style and aspirations, which will then guide us in creating a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) file. This file becomes the blueprint that the CNC machine uses to precisely cut the board, reducing waste and ensuring a seamless start to the board build process.

As you embark on your 5 day journey of building, we'll be there to capture your progress. These snapshots will serve as both a visual record of your work and a personal keepsake of your experience.

The plan

  • We start by observing the pre-cut blank which we design together on CAD two weeks before the course start date. Here we can fine-tune dimensions, volume, and find the perfect design.

The next step will be to groom (or fluff) the blank.

  • Glassing is our main job for the day. With our board oven, we should be able to glass the top and bottom deck in one day. Board tints and designs are seriously encouraged!

  • Next up, we apply decals. If there is anything specific you want, we can sort it out ahead of time. We are lucky to have talented local artists working with us to produce graphics for our boards.

Install fin boxes / leash plug. FCS is our usual choice - we recommend it for first-time builders.

Apply sand coat 1, and then sand coat 2.

  • Starting with a heavy morning of sanding, we work mostly on taking out the high spots, getting the board as flat and even as possible.

Then we apply hot coat 1, followed by hot coat 2.

  • Starting again with a heavy sand, we take the board up through the sanding grits as we get closer to the finish line.

One last wet sand to the desired finish.

    Finish / Beer o'clock.
